Eliot was very glad to still be his normal adult self this weekend, considering that his child self had not yet been properly Eliot.

Margo, on the other hand, had clearly been Margo through and through since birth.

"You're not doing it right," she said imperiously. "You have to hold your pinkie out like this!" She demonstrated with the little tea set that Eliot had turned their normal sized tea set into for the weekend.

"Ah, you're right, darling," Eliot said with supreme dignity. "My apologies." He held his pinkie out, receiving an approving nod. "And would your majesty like another tea cake?"

Tiny Margo was adorable, and had Eliot wrapped tightly around her little finger. And neither of them would let the other forget it when she was back to her full-sized self again.

Margo plucked the sandwich from the plate and shoved half of it into her mouth.

She knew how to drink and eat properly. She was also hungry1

"You have little bit of cream cheese . . . ." Eliot said, sliding her a napkin.

Margo took the napkin like she was owed it. She put her sandwich down daintily.

“There’s too much dill,” she said.

Eliot was pretty sure Margo didn't know what dill was.

"Ah well. I'll remember for next time. Would you pass the tea, dear?"

“You gotta say please,” Margo said, sandwich still in her mouth.

"Don't talk with your mouthful, Bambi, it's gauche." Eliot chided. "Would you pass the tea, please?"

Margo picked up the teapot and held it out for him with straining little arms.

“No, I can do what I want.”

"That's true. If you want to be gauche, you're absolutely free to be gauche." Eliot shrugged. "But you will still be gauche."

Did Margo know what 'gauche' was? Well, from his tone she could at least work out that it was bad.

“And why should I care about that?” Margo demanded. “Maybe I like being gauche!”

"Do you?" Eliot asked. "What do you like best about it?"

“I can talk and eat at the same time. It’s great.”

"And when your food spills down your shirt?"

Margo lifted her chin. “It won’t.”

"You know how to make sure it won't?" Eliot asked.

“Yes,” Margo said firmly.

She didn’t.

"And how's that, then?" Eliot asked, and took a delicate sip of his tea.

Real tea. None of this imaginary tea crap for his Bambi.

Margo lifted her cup, pinkie outstretched. “I’m,” she announced, “Not. Telling you. ’Cause you were rude.”

Sip.

"I was not," Eliot protested. "I am a consummate gentleman."

“You forgot to say please the first time,” Margo reminded him.

The irony that Margo was the one lecturing him on being rude was not at all lost on Eliot, though he didn't let his amusement show.

"I'll admit that was somewhat inconsiderate. But it's not nearly as rude as talking with one's mouth full."

Guess what 'gauche' meant. Well. Sort of.

Margo grabbed another sandwich. “I’m not rude,” she said. “I’m ‘sertive.”

"You're very assertive," Eliot agreed. "But the two are not mutually exclusive, my dear."

“’s not what Daddy says,” Margo said, lifting her chin imperiously.

"Well, what does your daddy say, then?"

“That I’m ‘sertive ’cause I say what I want and some people are gonna be weird about it but I shouldn’t care,” Margo said primly. “Only girls care about what other people think.”

“Ah. And being a girl is . . . bad?”

“They only care about ponies. And hair.”

“Hmmm. There must not be very many girls in the world, then.”

“No, there’s lots,” Margo said, and shoved another chunk of sandwich in her mouth.

"And yet, I don't think I've met a single one." Eliot sipped his tea. "How strange."

Margo chewed loudly. “Maybe you don’t get out much.”

"I suppose I must not. I thought I had, but if you're the authority on girls. . . ."

“I am,” Margo said, nodding. “I want another strawberry.”

"Do you?" Eliot asked blithely. "That must be very frustrating for you."

Look, he could be wrapped around her little finger and also tease her a little at the same time.

Margo tilted her head and looked at him expectantly.

Eliot blinked innocently back and her and nibbled on a cucumber sandwich.
